Dr. Sena Kumarasena has served as the Project Manager and Lead Engineer since 2006 (original design completed in 2002 by others) for pre-construction preparation and construction phase services for the 450-ft span 225-ft tall New Chelsea Street Vertical Lift Bridge. The bridge replaces the existing structurally deficient, functionally obsolete, through truss drawbridge, which accommodated only a 95-ft channel clearance.  A vertical-lift bridge was used for the replacement design because it allowed the lift towers to be constructed on top of the through truss structure of the original drawbridge, thus allowing the bridge to remain in service during the initial phases of construction.
