Mr. Kumarasena served as the Lead EnDr. Kumarasena served as the Lead Engineer and Deputy Project Manager for the final design and as the Project Manager for the construction-phase services for this landmark, award winning cable stayed bridge. The bridge has a 745-ft main span and 295-ft and 425-ft asymmetric back spans. The 195-ft wide bridge deck includes a 45-ft wide roadway section cantilevered to the outer side of eastern cable plane. Several solutions for technical and constructability challenges on this one-of-a-kind project were developed. Huge span asymmetry led to several technical complexities such as huge torsion in deck and large differences in cable tensile forces for dead and live loads. The deck also included an eccentric cantilevered walkway which results in overturning forces in the deck and induces torsion into the pylon. These were the technical challenges that were effectively solved by innovative engineering techniques such as usage of light weight concrete, eccentric cable placements, composite tower, and several other techniques.
